James (’95, Tulane Law) was drawn back to Tulane by the opportunity to establish and grow the Research Business Development group for the institution that is closest to his heart. In his position of Chief Business Officer, he will serve as a business development strategist and full concierge to industry.
The Research Business Development Office will work closely with Grants & Contracts, Development, Technology Transfer and other departments at Tulane to ensure an optimal enterprise experience for our industry and other external partners. James holds a B.S. in chemistry from Centre College, a J.D. from Tulane University Law School and an LLM in Intellectual Property and Media Policy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also trained in Science Policy and Leadership from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and serves on the boards of AUTM (The Association of University Technology Managers) and The BioJudiciary Project.
Before returning to Tulane, James spent over 20 years in the private and academic sectors. His most recent role involved originating all aspects of Technology Transfer and Open Science for the HHMI Janelia Research Campus community, including: relationship development and management, innovations, company collaborations, materials transfer, outsourcing contracts, and open-science policy and practical implementation. Before joining HHMI, he also served as a chemist, performing product development research for Rhone-Poulenc; headed Communications, New Media and Software strategy for the Warner Bros daily TV show EXTRA; and then spent 13 years in academic technology transfer at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and the University of Louisville, where he was responsible for starting and building the technology transfer office.
James is also a certified Spinning(R) and Cycling instructor, which plays well into his love of music, and helps counteract his great appreciation for good food. When he isn’t at work, you’ll often find him hanging out at his favorite place to dine in the French Quarter – Meauxbar.
